Farhad Rachidi was the recipient of the 2017 Motohisa Kanda Award for the most cited paper of the IEEE Transactions on EMC in the past five years. This award was given during the 2017 IEEE Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility and Signal and Power Integrity, which took place in August in Washington DC. The award recognizes the most ‘significant’ paper in the past five years in terms of the highest citation count.

Farhad Rachidi received this award for his paper entitled “A Review of Field-to-Transmission Line Coupling Models with Special Emphasis to Lightning-Induced Voltages on Overhead Lines”.

In this paper, Farhad Rachidi presents a new derivation of the equations describing the interaction of an external electromagnetic field with a transmission line, and the equivalent models which can be inferred under the transmission line approximation. It is also shown that when distributed sources representing the action of the electromagnetic field from a nearby lightning illuminating the line are present, losses due to the presence of a finitely-conducting ground and corona phenomenon could result in the enhancement of the induced voltage magnitude.
